End-of-degree dissertation

The End-of-degree dissertation (TFG, as per Spanish acronym) must be an original, unpublished, individual and autonomous academic piece of work, which serves to prove that our would-be graduates have acquired all competences required to work as a teacher in primary education.

The dissertation must showcase students have acquired the general and specific competences set out in the degree’s programme. Their ability to implement general knowledge into practice.

The TFG is, therefore, the last step towards obtaining the degree. It also proves that the student, having attained the degree’s objectives, is fully qualified to work as a professional teacher in their field of expertise.

Therefore, the dissertation must clearly be oriented to the implementation of the relevant professional skills linked to the degree, both regarding the dissertation itself and the defence, through video conference or on-site before a committee appointed by the University.

The dissertation is worth 18 ECTS within the degree’s programme, which involves 450 hours of student’s work. The end-of-degree dissertation can never be passed through credit recognition.

Dissertation Commission

The Dissertation Commission will be in charge of setting rules and procedures, ensuring compliance, setting the timing and work schedule, and solving potential problems. The Commission’s coordination work will be twofold:

  • Student coordination: through notices published on the relevant online platform with important information and reminders of key issues.
  • Supervisor coordination: through a relevant section on the online platform in order to ensure the implementation of common standards in the supervision and assessment process

Course requirements

Enrolment on the End-of-degree dissertation is only possible once 180 ECTS have been completed and upon enrolment of all remaining courses in the degree programme. In addition, the defence will only be possible upon successful completion of all courses in the degree, either at ordinary or extraordinary examination periods.

Course description

The course will be oriented towards the teacher in primary education.

Students can choose from a conceptual (theoretical) or an analytical (interpretative) approach according to the different subjects established by the degree.

This work will necessarily involve the implementation of all competences developed throughout the degree by applying a comprehensive approach.

It will be focused in the role of the teacher in the specialization(s) previously studied or in different elements from both, compulsory and optional courses.

hose TFG included in a specialization must provide successful experiences or new ways of enhancing the teaching practice. In addition, the specialization must be mentioned in the title.

Finally, the supervision is an essential element in the work’s development. Supervisors not only will provide all the information the student needs but they will also provide counselling about conceptual and methodological issues.

Subjects / Topics

The TFG is an original and individual academic piece of work, which serves to prove the student’s professional development.

Students must choose from two subjects or topics provided by the Degree. The supervisor will help them make the final decision on the subject that best suits the student’s preferences.

The two subjects or topics are the following:

  • Subject or Topic 1. Document analysis or Bibliographic review: it consists in studying, gathering, selecting and analysing bibliographic material about a specific topic using reliable research sources. This subject includes many possibilities, such as: a critical review on different educational approaches, a conceptual analysis, a specific educational strategy, the analysis of a particular methodology, a comparative study of different methodologies, etc.
  • Subject or Topic 2. Educational action research project: Considering the student’s knowledge and/or teaching experience, a specific education topic that needs further improvement must be taken for analysis. This project must include an exhaustive theoretical background where the content, structure and objectives are clearly described. In addition, it must be focused in a real context, such as an education centre, an individual or group specific situation, etc. Finally, the project must include a design of the methods and techniques that will be used (didactic unit, additional activities, curriculum adaptation, etc.) and an analysis of expected results, conclusions and further improvements.

The above information is open to the inclusion of new sections if the supervisor or student see fit to expand or emphasize a particular aspect of the project.

Learning process

Two main stages have been designed for the proper development of the TFGs. Both stages cover the entire academic year and each of them will deal with specific didactic features.

Initial stage

This stage covers the first term and will be developed in the Virtual Classroom. The students will get familiar with the course and its progression.

Through the Virtual Classroom, students will have access to the required materials of the course: the syllabus, informative documents on the different modalities, and the template to structure the TFG appropriately.

There won’t be a direct supervision process in this stage. However, the Dissertation Commission will carry out coordination tasks through regular announcements in the Virtual Classroom.

The student will develop the following assignments:

  • To read and understand the materials provided according to the specific timing and recommendations from the Dissertation Commission.
  • To reflect on the different subjects or topics established and particularly on the topic chosen by the student for the development of their TFG. The Dissertation Commission should be informed about this decision in due time.
  • To select an assessment method (continuous or final assessment) before the set deadline.

Development stage

This stage covers the second and third term and involves the writing process of the TFG.

A tutor or supervisor will be assigned by the University for the proper development of this stage. The supervision process will take place through e-mail and only the University email account will be used for this purpose.

The supervisor will work for the students acquisition of the relevant competences of the course. The supervisor must comply with the following tasks

  • To guide the student providing counselling, supervising their work and solving any question they may have.
  • To assess student’s work providing useful feedback that improves their learning process. This process will depend on the student’s assessment option (see assessment section).
  • To authorize the dissertation defence.

The student’s duties will be the following:

  • To keep regular and continued communication with the supervisor (through the University e-mail account).
  • To access the Virtual Classroom on a daily basis (checking for new documents or announcements from the Dissertation Commission).
  • To implement the feedback and corrections provided by the supervisor in each submission.


This is the final stage of the course and will take place at the end of the third term.

Students’ dissertation defence will only be possible with prior authorisation by the supervisor. This authorisation does not mean or ensure that students will pass the course.

The defence will take place before an examination board via videoconference unless students express their preference for a face-to-face defence, in which case the defence will take place on Universidad Isabel I premises in Burgos.

The relevant information on the process of defence will be published in the Virtual Classroom.


Students can choose from two assessment modalities:

Continuous and formative assessment

students must follow a compulsory submission schedule, each of which will be thoroughly reviewed and commented on by the supervisor. This modality implies the following commitments both, by students and supervisors:

  • To comply with the timing established for the compulsory submissions and with the specific structure and content criteria.
  • In each submission, the supervisor will assess the student’s work providing useful feedback that improves their learning process and TFG.
  • The supervisors will provide the Dissertation Commission with a series of follow-up reports of each student’s submission.
  • All queries will be dealt with through the University e-mail account. Regular contact between student and supervisor is essential.

Final assessment

students will have to submit two compulsory drafts to ensure formative assessment by supervisors, who will review and suggest improvements on these drafts.

The submission deadlines are published in the timing section of the virtual classroom. These submissions must meet the following requirements:

  • Partial or incomplete submissions of the TFG will not be allowed. The submissions must contain the complete dissertation.
  • Submissions must comply with the established criteria regarding time and structure.
  • The last submission will be thoroughly reviewed by the supervisor, who will provide feedback and suggest improvements on this final version of the work. The student will have a specific period to make changes and correct the dissertation following the supervisor’s guidelines. If the student fails in making this submission on time, it won’t be possible to submit the final version of the TFG.
  • The TFG’s deposit will be made through the Virtual Classroom. All sections required for this final submission must be filled up correctly. The TFG must be attached as a pdf document. In case there are annexes to the work, these should be attached separately in another document. After the deposit, the supervisor will assess the TFG and inform the student whether the work is suitable for the defence process or not

In this assessment modality, the communication with the supervisor will be constant. The supervisor will solve any questions from the student during the development process of the TFG.

All students, regardless of their assessment modality, who don’t pass the ordinary examination period, can submit the TFG in an extraordinary examination period.

The process of supervision and submission of the dissertation in this extraordinary examination period will follow the same regulations and guidelines as the final assessment modality

Grading system

Two core items will be graded; students need to pass both with a minimum mark of 5 out of 10 in each.

  • Supervision of the end-of-degree dissertation, worth 50% of the final mark.
  • Grade awarded by the Examination Board at the defence, worth 50% of the final mark. Two elements will be considered:
    • Written work assessment (70%)
    • Dissertation defence (30%). The student will have to pass the presentation and the following discussion period of the defence in order to complete the course.
