Internship – Practicum, What is it?

The internship period in this MA degree (also known as Practicum) is established in the regulation whereby the requirements for teacher training courses and curricula are set (ORDEN ECI/3858/2007 de 27 de diciembre), more specifically regulation governing higher education qualifications for teachers in secondary education, vocational training, and language teaching.

The Practicum is compulsory and includes a compulsory internship period at school authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Education. It aims at providing students with hands-on practice in a professional environment to develop and apply relevant skills and tools as a teacher.

The internship period within this Master’s degree at Universidad Isabel I lasts for eight weeks. In the academic year 2016-2017 will preferably take place in January, February, March, and April 2017. You can click on the Practicum guide at the bottom of the page for further information on the allocation process in each Autonomous Community.

What is the workload involved in the Practicum?

It amounts to 12 ECTS credits, or 300 hours of student work, of which 200 hours (8 credits) are linked to the internship period in a school. The internship period will split into two stages: observation and practice, as explained below.

How can the Practicum be recognised?

For the course Internship/practicum to be recognised through other means, at least 183 hours of professional practice as a teacher in secondary, vocational training or language schools must be duly proved.

This experienced will have to be certified by a work record, social security contributions record, contracts or complany certificates. The job category (in terms of social contributions -1 or 2-) must be clearly stated, as proof of higher-education qualification.

If work experience is certified as a freelance (self-employed) worker, the work category registered and declared at the tax authority must match the required level of education.

The amount of credits recognised through professional experience can never exceed the maximum amount of 15% of the total credits included in the degree (9 credits in 60-credit degrees).

The student will have to complete the remaining credits to reach the workload required by the Practicum through the creation of material, activity-contextualisation, information analysis and the submission of a report on their internship.

What specialisations are available?

Students of the Master’s degree on teacher training at Universidad Isabel I can choose one of the following specialisations. A tutor-coordinator is available for each specialisation, in addition to academic tutors assigned to students by the university:

What does the internship period involve?

Students will spend 8 full time internship weeks in the allocated school (200 hours). A secondary tutor will be appointed by the school (according to the student’s specialisation) to supervise the internship. The internship period will be devided into two stages:

  • Observation stage (3 ECTS): the student will get familiar with the school, the school environment, the educational project, and how the school plans and organises teaching. The student will also gain an insight into the school tutor teaching practice.
  • Practice stage (5 ECTS): the student will get hands-on practice on guided and independent teaching, always under the supervision of the school tutor.

The school tutor will plan and organise both stages, with the support of the academic tutor at Universidad Isabel I.

How will assessment be done?

The Practicum final grade will be calculated as follows:

  • Mark given by the secondary school tutor on the internship period at school (40% of the final grade). Marks on a 1 to 10 scale will be awarded on the basis of a 10-item assessment form. The final mark of this part will be calculated as the sum of all the marks awarded by item divided into 10.
  • Mark awarded to the internship report (portfolio) by the academic tutor (60%).

A minimum grade of 5 out of 10 by the secondary school tutor is required to pass the course. Any mark below 5 in this section implies the student will have to take this course (internship) again. If the mark given to the internship report by the academic tutor at university is below 5, but the grade awarded to the internship period by the school tutor is 5 or over, the student will just need to submit the report again.
